Companies Surveys |
The Companies Survey is a quarterly survey of about 700 companies. Participants are asked to report on the direction of changes in different variables (increase, decrease, or no change), and on the degree of change (great, slight).
The results are analyzed by means of the net balance, defined as the difference between the percentage of companies reporting an increase and the percentage of those reporting a decrease, and this is used as an indicator of developments in particular variables in the different industries.
The overall net balance of activity provides an early indication of the state of the economy in the quarter under review; it is published before the usual macroeconomic indicators of real activity, such as business-sector product, manufacturing production or the composite state-of-the-economy index. It depicts the overall by-industry picture of the business sector, and it has been found that it can reflect Israel's business cycle.
The overall net balance is calculated from the seasonally adjusted net balance of activity in all industries, weighted by the share of each industry in total business-sector product.

The area above the shaded horizontal section indicates that the economy is tending towards a boom, the area below the shaded section that it is tending towards a recession, and the shaded area itself, that no clear conclusion can be drawn from the responses to the survey questionnaire. The vertical shaded areas show the periods when the economy was in recession, derived from the probability of a slowdown in activity, calculated from the composite index.
