This paper examines patterns of labor force participation of Israeli Arabs. The paper presents data and estimates of participation equations. Two key findings are:
| (i) |
The life-cycle participation profile of Arab men is non-standard, with a steep fall at a relatively early age
(ii) |
A low average participation rate for Arab women, with substantial variance cross-sectionally.
Explanations of these phenomena include:
For men - employment in professions requiring physical skills leads to early retirement while relying on family support; for women - the effect on participation of factors that characterize the individual as "modern" or "traditional."
